Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference 2011 - Trip back home
An hour before Beat's flight we decided it was time to go through security as lines were quickly getting long. We were greeted by some very nice TSA agents with whom we spent time talking about the different [crazy!] seasons in Fargo and Montreal -- Beat's from Montreal.
Once our carry-on was inspected, TSA agents had a particular interest in Beat's carry-on suitcase. As it turned out, my friend was trying to smuggle an apple juice box unsuccessfully out of the country :-). The juice box was confiscated and off we went to gate 1 from where both of our flights would depart.
Once in the air, I managed to capture this nice pic of the Fargodome, home of some of the best matches between archrivals UND and NDSU.
My flight arrived at Concourse G at the Lindbergh Terminal in Minneapolis. This was not all that bad considering my outbound flight to Atlanta was leaving at Concourse F. Nonetheless, MSP's terminals are not to be taken lightly, as there's considerable distance between each of their concourses. So, off I went to gate F9.
??
Nice display at gate G12 on the way to F9??
Upon arriving at F9, I was able to catch a break and sit for a bit. The flight, as it is usually the case with Delta flights, was oversold and completely booked. However, and to my surprise, the cleared passengers list was taken care of by the gate personnel pretty quick, so boarding began on time - did not get an upgrade for this leg of the trip.
?
View from my seat in the aircraft to the tarmac?
Once seated onboard the aircraft, after watching a tourtous boarding process for the non-Sky Priority passengers, and ready to depart, the captain announced that we had a "maintenance issue" and would be departing in 30 more minutes.
Well, at least this made me feel like David and I weren't the only one having problems this week. You can read David's post on his computer issues here. You can follow up on the issues I experienced here.
The "maintenance issue" translated into a defective toillet in the bathroom, which was frankly replaced very shortly after the captain made the announcement. It looks like the maintenance crew had their game face on. The captain returned and made the announcement that we would be leaving immediately and would still reach our destination ontime.
After a very exciting and draining week, that's all I needed to know.
Tomorrow, don't miss the Technical Conference materials on Support Debugging Tool and Introduction to Microsoft Dynamics GP Customization Tools on my blog. These will be made available for download.
Until next post!

Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference 2011 - Closing session
It's hard to believe that this is the last day of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference 2011, in the very hospitable Fargo, North Dakota. After a late night putting together the Day 2 post and the Microsoft Dynamics GP roadmap post, and having a bit of fun with partners and ISVs at the bar in the Ramada's lobby, it was now time to pack and get ready to go home.?
Note: I still believe Babs pulled the fire alarm cord to get all the poor tired souls in attendance up on their feet again :-)
The Conference organization team - From left to right, Babs Coler (Microsoft), Lanelle Vasichek (Spider and Company), Mariano Gomez, Naomi Wavers (Spider and Company)The triggerting of the fire alarms was possibly due to an issue with the local grid (earlier at the Ramada, lights flickered for a bit) which overloaded a few circuits on Campus. The local fire department quickly inspected the building and gave their clearance to return to the affected facilities, so we returned to the Dakota conference room where the closing session was going to be delivered.
With the closing session now running 1 hour behind schedule, I was only able to attend the Sponsors Shootout session - briefly anyways.
As with anything in life, the Conference must come to and end: it was time to say goodbye once more to my friends David and Leslie who will be leaving town in the next couple days.
David Musgrave, Leslie Vail, Beat Bucher, Mariano Gomez - Goodbye!Just know that your Dynamic Duo will be back as presenters at Microsoft Dynamics Convergence Atlanta 2011, so register go and register now.
Until next post!

Day 3 of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference
After going into the evening last night with table topics where I saw many partner geeking out with each other, having great discussions, the last day of the Technical Conference is here. This picture reminds me of many of our partners, the lone warrior improving their customer's business with solid solutions.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, they help make this conference possible.
Gold Sponsors: Blue Moon and MetaViewerSilver Sponsors: Binary Stream and KeCommerceExhibitors: Fastpath Solutions, MC2, and Rockton SoftwareWe ended the day with a Q and A which is always fun. A certain partner from Rockton (I'm sure you all know who he is.) had pre-prepared questions ready, but after he saw Microsoft Dynamics GP '12' on Tuesday he said he would have to re-write his questions. I was really interested in find out what what he came up with.
Here are some of the highlights to the questions and feedack.
Bill brought up a few good ideas on how to improve our tax update process. This year had a lot of tax updates and we will learn from this experience to see how we can make this experience better.Suggestions were made to add support tools into the product instead of a separate download. Development and support are working together to see what options are available.MS Connect. I've blogged about this before, so I won't go on and on, but please start using MS Connect. http://www.connect.microsoft.com/Prior to the conference many felt unhappy about the perception of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 in the market, now after the conference they are excited. The product strategy and direction for Microsoft Dynamics GP '12' changes everything in a good way.Another great event, now we'll focus on Convergence 2011.

Microsoft Works to Build Partner Enthusiasm on Dynamics GP’s Future at 2011 Technical Conference
Microsoft Dynamics GP is not dead.
That was the central message in the opening sessionof this week's Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference 2011, according to MarianoGomez, Microsoft MVP at IntellPartnersLLC.
One of Microsoft's goals for the conference was to reassurethe partner community of its commitment to the Dynamics GP product line, Gomezexplained in a new blogpost.
"Ten minutes into the session we were alreadygetting glimpses of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 R2, the next major revision ofthe now familiar Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010," he wrote. "Clearly, Microsoft isgoing in the right direction and, while there's a lot more work to be done, thefuture looks very promising."
Gomez brieflyoutlined his understanding of Microsoft's roadmap for Dynamics GP:

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Programming Cookbook
It has actually been quite a while since this book was released (it says October 2010 in the book), but somehow I had missed it in the stack of books on my desk always waiting for me. And reading has not been what I have done most the last year.
Matt Traxinger is known in the NAV community as MattTrax, where he has been spending a lot of time on Mibuso and of course on my own home-base the Dynamics User Group.
The book is a real "cookbook" - not a lot of text - but a lot easy to use "recipes" on how to tweak Navision. There are over 110 such recipes and they span over a wide area within both "traditional" C/AL programming and C/SIDE juggling, integration to Excel and how to access and update NAV from outside of NAV using both Web Services. And there are good recipes both for real new beginners and those who have "been around" for years, like my self. There was many great recipies from which I learned a lot.
If I have to say anything bad about the book, then it must be that the code examples are not using the same standard for indention as Microsoft uses, and to me that actually makes it slower to read the examples. But it doesn't matter, the book and the examples are so good that I really shouldn't say that. MattTrax has really done a great book.
I really can give this book my warmest recommendations. I think it should be standard in all NAV developers book collection.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference - Day 2
The second day of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Technical Conference was filled with sessions around Dynamics GP 2010 R2, Customization Tools, Management Reporter, SQL Reporting Services and a lot more.
Demos will be made available on CustomerSource and PartnerSource. We will have customer facing web seminars in the April/May time frame through GPUG.The presentations will be made available to partners on PartnerSource in the coming weeks! The conference has a tingling buzz hovering around it, many talking about two topics:
1. The new Business Analyzer coming in Dynamics GP 2010 R2 and the impact it will have on customers. A major consensus is that this can have a huge impact on customers without a lot of expense. I can't wait to hear customer stories on this.
2. The brilliant innovation of the plans for Microsoft Dynamics GP '12.' Partners are excited about the opportunities it will bring and the potential. Our ISV's are also excited wanting to know how they can align with our plans. It's a really good time to be part of the Dynamics GP family.
So far, so good.

Using OData Retrieve in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011
With the release of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011, we have added a new Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) data services (ODATA) endpoint. The endpoint facilitates CRUD operation on entities via scripts using Atom or Json format. In this blog I would be talking about some of the considerations when using the endpoint, specifically around the use of retrieves.
First, the operations supported over this endpoint are limited to create, retrieve, update and delete. The REST philosophy does not support other operations and so we followed J. We did not implement others since the story around service operations is not fully developed in the current WCF data services offering.
The $format and $inlinecount operators are not supported. We only support the $filter, $select, $top, $skip, $orderby
Some of the restrictions when using the implemented operators are.
· Page size is fixed to max 50 records
· $top gives the total records returned across multiple pages
· When using with distinct queries, we are limited to the total (skip + top) record size = 5000.
· In CRM the distinct queries does not use paging cookie are and so we are limited by the CRM platform limitation to the 5000 record.
· One level of navigation property selection is allowed I.e.
…/AccountSet?$select=Name,PrimaryContactId,account_primary_contact
…/AccountSet?$select=Name,PrimaryContactId,account_primary_
contact/LastName&$expand=account_primary_contact
· Conditions on only one group of attributes are allowed. By a group of attribute I am referring to a set of conditions joined by And/Or clause.
· The attribute group may be on the root entity
.../TaskSet?$expand=Contact_Tasks&$filter=Subject eq 'test' and Subject ne null
· (or) on the expanded entity.
.../TaskSet?$expand=Contact_Tasks&$filter=Contact_Tasks/FirstName eq '123‘
· Arithmetic, datetime and math operators are not supported
· Under string function we support Substringof, endswith, startswith
· Order are only allowed on the root entity.
· Only one level of navigation is allowed in any direction of a relationship. The relationship could be 1:N, N:1, N:N
Cheers,
Shashi Ranjan

How Chemical Manufacturers Can Use Microsoft Dynamics AX to Manage Co-Products
The production process for many chemical products often results in usable co-products or unusable by-products requiring disposal. In some cases, co-products may be used as an ingredient in the next production run of the parent item. Other cases may require planned orders for the parent item in order to satisfy demands for its associated co-product. As a result, co-products have implications for formula definitions, cost calculations, master scheduling logic and production reporting in an ERP system. This article focuses on the implications of handling co-products within Microsoft Dynamics AX, and an upcoming article will cover the implications of handling by-products.
The concept of co-products applies to chemical manufacturers and to other types of manufacturers. For example, the concept applies to grading/sorting of agricultural products, cut plans for meat/poultry products, slitting of rolled products, cutting pieces of steel products, and the production process for life science products. Illustrations within this article focus on chemical products.

Connectivity Studio and Web Services for Microsoft Dynamics NAV
The To-Increase Connectivity Studio, which provides a unified software solution for integrations between Microsoft Dynamics NAV and other applications for an array of situations, including those as simple as a CSV file import/export on the local machine, to more complex business processes spanning several companies. The program provides a clear separation between the functional and the technical aspects of integration, allows the consultant or key user to model the required integration instead of hard-coding it, shields the consultant or key user from the underlying technology, and provides customization options to the application developer in a well-defined framework.

Microsoft Dynamics Partner Roundup: Food Distribution Solution Announced...New AX and CRM Wins…New Member Joins Advisory Council
JustFoodERP Launches ERP Package for Food Distributors
JustFoodERP has rolled out a new ERP package aimed at food distributors looking to modernize their systems.
Based on the Microsoft Dynamics platform, JustFoodERP's new package offers food distributors an integrated solution for sales, purchasing, planning, inventory management, food safety, warehouse management, shipping and logistics management, according to the company.
"Legacy technology solutions are simply not able to support the information requirements now required by the growing food distributor," said Marc DiGiorgio, Vice President of JustFoodERP, in a statement. "The demand for accurate real-time inventory and costing information is increasing in its importance to food distributors, especially as profit margins get squeezed. JustFoodERP and Microsoft recognize that it is doubly difficult to consider a capital expense like a new ERP investment during times like this, and for this reason, have created a new pricing model that reduces this investment by a sizeable amount."

The Dynamics Laggard, Part 2: Why Has Expertise for Microsoft Dynamics NAV Become So Scarce?
Veterans of the Microsoft Dynamics NAV community contend that the parent company, Microsoft, must shoulder at least some of the responsibility for the difficulties now confronting partners and recruiters seeking to attract Dynamics NAV experts.
Part 1 of this two-part series described the growing difficulties facing Dynamics NAV partners and customers in attracting top-quality expertise to oversee installation and customization projects for user of Dynamics NAV.
"The NAV community is a big community and there are a lot of professionals but there seems to be more work out there then there are resources," said Marc DiGiorgio, VP of JustFoodERP, a Microsoft NAV partner. "So it's been a real challenge over the years. It's probably one of the biggest constraints to our business because right now we're looking to hire three or four people and it's really hard to find them. If you're looking for people with NAV experience, they're quite content living the lifestyle of a contractor, working on their own terms going from project to project just contracting. There's a huge community of those guys. That's not what we're interested in. We want employees."
