To say that Dynamics SL plays an integral role in the day-to-day operations
of most of its customers is an understatement. Therefore any upgrade to
the software must be approached with caution. Upgrade too soon and you
can suffer from broken customization or reports, software bugs, or other
problems from not fully testing all the new features and options with your
current business processes. Upgrade too late and you can miss out on
significant new product features or greater efficiency from new technology,
or even find yourself left with an aging, unsupported system.

Evaluating a New Business System

This whitepaper identifies critical business issues that may surface as your business changes, which may require you to seek alternative systems to run your business and achieve your growth goals. Selecting a new business system is a major undertaking which requires due diligence. CPG distributors and manufacturers have unique business needs that require them to evaluate systems by looking at the relationships they have outside of their own four walls.

This guide is divided into two parts. Part I focuses on general guidelines for evaluating a new business system, while Part II focuses on supply chain details that Consumer Goods companies need to consider as they are evaluating new systems. Using this guide, you should be able to easily evaluate the impact your current business system is having on your operations and growth, and identify ways in which a new system would provide you with increased capacity, streamlined operations, and the ability to accommodate changing business climates over the next ten years.

Smooth-Running Supply Chains Start With a Solid ERP System

From an applications software perspective, the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry faces a dilemma. Most of these companies continue to rely on enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems as a transactional backbone, yet require additional products for supply chain optimization and execution. Why? Many ERP systems are not designed to address the core tenets of process manufacturing, and most non-durable CPG companies have process-based
manufacturing and distribution activities that have very specific requirements.

These companies are forced to take ERP systems designed for discrete operations and retrofit them with additional products to support their process-oriented operations. This is not the case for all ERP systems. Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 and Process Industries for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 address many of the core ERP and supply chain execution requirements required by non-durable CPG companies.

This positioning paper will attempt to describe the problems faced by non-durable CPG companies and how Microsoft’s products help solve them.
